Abstract

Many modern translations treat ‘root’ in ‘Root of Jesse/David’ as a synonym for ‘descendant.’ Based on context in Revelation 22 and Isaiah 11, this paper argues that ‘Root of David/Jesse’ means not the descendant but rather the source or origin, indicating that Jesus is the very source of Jesse and David’s existence.
