Putting everybody in their place

This paper looks at strategies in NuxaaÌ Mixtec (NM) to indicate social deixis—how language reflects social relationships. Bare imperatives are never directed to people of higher status in NM, so biblical prayers require mitigation. The paper examines several passages in Acts and presents guidelines for determining social deixis strategies in translation.
