The Impact of Local Typesetting on the Translation Process
Abstract
PTXprint is a tool that empowers local translation teams to create trial publications and data visualizations in a timely fashion in situ. Teams can produce quality trial publications such as diglots against regional languages or multiple scripts of the same language; local trial editions of recently approved scripture; all that were impractical before. Such trial publications allow true community checking of paratextual components such as layout, pictures, glossaries, maps, etc. Consultants can also be helped through the production of interlinear layouts and analysis diglots.
This empowerment can help improve many stages of the translation and publication process, but it also raises questions of the traditional translation and publication path. While this paper examines the benefits of these new processes, it also examines the impact and challenges these new processes and approaches will have on the work of consultants, translators and typesetters. How could this game-changing technology help us really embrace sustainable localization?
