Mike and his family have been missionaries with Lutheran Bible Translators of Canada (LBTC) serving in Cameroon since 2013. He is the Translation Advisor for the Nizaa New Testament project and, since November 2020, has also served as the Lutheran Bible Translators representative to Cameroon.
Toward maximizing community initiative in translation projects
Abstract
This study concerns the development and early implementation of a three-phased approach to partnering with language populations on translation projects. The phases lead the dialog between project partners to progress intentionally along prospective, candidate, and active projects lines. Each phase calls on the translation organization administrator to interact with language population leaders in different ways with the aim of maximizing the level of initiative and leadership that the local language population can take on.
The session facilitator draws on first-hand interactions with language leaders in Northern Cameroon and eight years of experience working on a translation project that suffers from low levels of community engagement to support and illustrate the importance of this phased approach to partnership. He has been applying this model of phased partnership since November 2020.
